The Cuban Finch
An original watercolor by Artist Jeffrey A. Moore.
Cuban Finches form small flocks, feeding primarily on seed (half-ripe seed heads) and on the ground. Pairs are monogamous and together build domed nests within 1.5 meters of the ground in dense shrubs, vine tangles, and bamboo, sometimes near wasps' nests and/or along waterways. The nest entrance is located low to one side of the nest and slopes upward into the nest chamber; some nests feature two entrances, one of which is thought to function as an "emergency exit." Cuban Finches love bathing.
